Bite Me! Melissa Francis Books
Can we just get more of this please? Melissa Francis has a great easy to read story of teen vampiredom in a way you never imagined. Not your cliche vampire story. This one is fun, whimsical at times, but shares the reality that is a teenagers life - right down to the often ignored real sexual tension, and blended family woes. Great story about AJ and her family, as well as the teen angst that comes with your boyfriend suddenly becoming a step brother.Tags : Amazon.com: Bite Me! Vampire books will always be my first love. Sure, I read a lot more contemporary now and far less paranormal, but paranormal YA is what made me a reader and will always have a place in my heart. A comedic vampire novel sounded like fun, especially when priced at less than $5 (thanks, Book Outlet!). At times, Bite Me! was a lot of fun and made me giggle. Overall, it’s a disappointment that’s kinda homophobic and possibly transphobic once it decides to throw everything good about itself in the trash.
Sometimes, this book is beyond adorable. You feel for the poor girl because she just lost the boyfriend she’s really into because her mom just HAD to marry his dad and step-sibling romances were frowned upon way back when. Now they’re the stuff of bestsellers that make people lose hope in humanity. That she’s a teenage vampire is almost negligible because AJ has a pretty good handle on that despite everything that happens with Noah. Francis’s vampire lore and the worldbuilding does fit in so naturally I kinda wondered for a minute if this was well-veiled nonfiction. (Shut up. If ghost cats exist, anything can AND GHOST CATS DEFINITELY EXIST). In addition, we have a book that’s about not the chosen one but the SISTER of the chosen one. Lots of chosen one narrators in books, not enough others.
Unfortunately enough, I didn’t mark any of the giggleworthy quotes and can’t remember any. I just remember the bad quotes and whoo boy, were there some stinkers. It’s been a while since I broke out the sticky notes to mark quotes with (mostly because I left the stickies at home and didn’t but more, but whatever), but Bite Me! had a few very… questionable quotes I wanted to make sure I didn’t lose. Sex-shaming, girl hate, and possible transphobia ahoy.
I was the good girl. The overachiever. The girl who excelled at everything. I didn’t smoke, didn’t drink (well, wouldn’t drink again), and didn’t skip school. And I wasn’t a ho. (The bra action with, now, two boys should not count against me.) (p. 63)
*pinches bridge of nose mightily* No one is a ho for that. For God’s sake, you can work in a BROTHEL and not be a ho. You’re a sex worker then. Hos, whores, sluts, etc. do not actually exist because they are social constructs we force onto people to make ourselves feel better. This rant could go on forever, but I have more quotes.
“You’re such a slut! That’s why you abandoned me tonight. You traded in your best friend for a booty call. I’m wounded.” (p. 124)
Said to her best friend, of all people. When you “lovingly” call your friends sluts, the patriarchy wins.
And now for the quote of What the Eff is This Even
“You’re one of those girls, aren’t you?”
“I’m sorry, Lindsey. I’m pretty smart, but I need you to be more specific here. If you mean I’m one of those girls with a vagina, then yes. I am.” Sometimes I crack myself up. (p. 141)
What?
“Ouch. That hurt. I think I’m gonna cry. Can I borrow one of the tissues you stuff in your bra to blow my nose?” (p. 151)
As someone who was regularly asked if she stuffed her bra in middle school, this is terrifically unfunny. To be fair, AJ apologizes to Lindsey later for being such a horrible person to her over her stepbrother/ex-boyfriend Ryan, but it didn’t feel like enough to make up for the barrage of poor characterization and treatment Lindsey got.
”Oh my God! Maybe [Mrs. Crandall] and Mrs. Young got it on in the teachers’ lounge before class. Maybe that was her ‘afterglow’ face.”
“Ew!” I said, laughing. “I can’t go there. You’ve got to stop giving me that mental picture. It makes me wanna poke out my mind’s eye.” (p. 144)
Draw your own conclusions on that one. Though clearly not intended to be homophobic, this quote immediately came across that way to me because EW TWO OLD WOMEN GETTING IT ON.
Okay, maybe that went on a little longer than expected. Not my fault this book has so many quotes full of fuckery.
Bite Me! is also unconcerned with subtlety. You can see where the story is going pretty quickly. The minor antagonist of the book? Bam. Got it in the first few chapters. The big antagonist? Also obvious. A twist that isn’t even revealed until the second book? Called it way ahead of time. I like to be surprised and that isn’t what this book is going for at all. Not the pleasant kind of surprise, at least. My entire experience was one big unpleasant surprise. At one point, AJ is about to go into the minor antagonist’s house and even SAYS “Doesn’t this feel kinda weird?” when she goes there and the house is empty when the person is supposed to be there. She goes in anyway because THE PLOT DEMANDS IT.
In the first few chapters, I felt almost certain I’d be picking up the second book in the series. I don’t think I’ll be doing that now, unfortunately. As much as I’d love to continue because I really love what Francis does with her vampires and warlocks, but if I get another book full of questionable things like this, I’m gonna be more done than that meat you forgot on the grill until it was thoroughly burned.
Great book about vampire in Mississippi! Very cool that I live not far from Memphis, wish it would have had more about Mississippi
I loved the voice in this book...it jumped off the page for me and I felt like the characters were with me telling me the story. Great debut from the author and hope to read a lot more from her!
I thought Bite me would be a comical quick read.....wow.....it Was comical...and I got swept into the story which was soooo good....soooo much better than I thought it was gonna be...Once finished I immediately ordered Love Sucks...Melissa Francis has a way with words and I admit I was very impressed....I will be keeping an eye out for any new books she writes...please bring more.
As far as I am concerned, a good novel is ageless so the fact that this book was written with a younger audience in mind meant nothing to me. Now that I've read it I can see that being a teenager, or as in my case... having a couple of them, really enhances an already fun and suspenseful story! Ms Francis really captures the personalities, dialogues and attitudes of good kids with smart mouths! (My favorite kind of kids by the way) The story is terrific and even for an old detective novel reader like me... the end came as a surprise. This was a fun read for any age and I am most definitely getting the second book and hoping for a third!
Bite Me! tells the story of 17 year-old AJ Ashe, who's holding in a big secret. She's a vampire. But vampires in AJ's world are different from your typical legendary vampires. They function perfectly well in daylight and they don't have to feed off humans. Instead, they drink hemo-shakes. When AJ's mother marries the father of the boy AJ is in love with, trouble starts. Now, she has to put aside her romantic feelings for Ryan and pretend their new melting pot family is one big modern Brady Bunch. Bite Me! is funny, spooky, and one fabulous read! I highly recommend it for both teens and adults, alike.
A nice read.
Noah was creepy. Mr Charles was bad. Malia weirded me out and made me suspicious. Bridget was okay. Rick was very nice as step-father. Aunt Doreen was awesome. AJ's mother was so and so. Ryan can be a sweety and a keeper at times, but he acted as a total jerk very often. I could totally feel for AJ. I would probably act and feel the same way she did, if I were in her place.
I totally didn't like that AJ and Ryan had to sacrifice their love because their parents fell in love after they already had started dating. That totally bugged me.
Ryan and AJ were really sweet together by the way.
It's maybe more like 3.5 stars. Curious to read Love Sucks.
