Immortals' Requiem An Epic Grimdark Fantasy Alternative Earth Novel eBook Vincent Bobbe

Naively we believe that we mortals are the rulers of the earth. Most do not see the worlds and beings that exist with us. When the magic holding everything in its place wears thin and the balance of power shifts, chaos unfolds. Unspeakable horror will reign, and the world as we mortals know it will end unless the good of immortals and mortals together can overcome evil. Great sacrifices must be made.

Immortals' Requiem is a skillfully told, action-packed, mind-boggling, heart-pounding tale taking place over 5 days and steeped in the history of over two millennia. A strong character set includes many types of immortals--Elves, Ifrits, Orcs, Jotnars, Therians, Barghests, Svartalfar, and hybrids--and mortal beings. The story is told from the point of view of the main and minor characters, and our knowledge of and the relationship with the characters becomes richer with each contact. Action occurs not only in the familiar setting of Manchester, England but also in the worlds parallel which the author creatively and believably describes in The Tower at Dawn and The Tower at Dusk. There are scenes of horrific violence including rape, but not graphic sex.

What I liked best about this book: It moved my mind from fantasy to reality. As a rule, I do not read fantasy. I do not read Tolkien. I do not even understand the Lord of the Rings movies. I get lost in the characters and their strange names. Although I was a bit frustrated with the first fifth of the book, it all came together. As the story progressed, the author added enough information to grow the story and the characters. If shape-shifting, un-destroyable characters can be real and relatable, the author accomplished it. If this is fantasy, I'm hooked.

What I like least about this book: The story does not have a strong beginning, and it took a while to figure out how the beginning related to the story as a whole. The writing at the beginning felt clumsy and strained. Persevere. Both of these faults resolved themselves as the story unfolds.

Immortals' Requiem An Epic Grimdark Fantasy Alternative Earth Novel eBook Vincent Bobbe Reviews

There is so much packed into the pages of this book, I could not stop reading, even at work! The characters are alive and exciting. I can not wait for the sequel.
A wonderfully entertaining blend of fantasy, elves, dragons, immortals, and the mundane dreariness of our common human modern lives. The modern world is sucking the last of the magic from the fantasy side of existence. This is the epic battle of two resurrected ancient enemies that could be the end of our modern civilization. Hard to put down, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat to the final chapter.
I loved the characters especially the one that kept getting killed over and over again. The description of the monsters was so wonderful I just could not put this book down!i would love for this author to write a sequel
.
Rather than a story, this is a puzzle you have to piece together. Every viewpoint is disjointed, some barely a page long, others are chapter length with random flashbacks. Rather than fantasy, this better labelled as mystery.
These ain't your regular fairies. This story was dark, violent and grim. If you are looking for a mid summer's night dream, this ain't it. It's no Lord of the Rings either. Having said that, it is still a really good read.
New author Vincent Bobbe has written a tour de force first novel worthy of awards. The immortals of our mythologies are waging modern day wars, fairies vs giants vs Romans vs zombies vs you get the idea. Following a half dozen major characters, we watch the story unfold as the characters become increasingly complex. The story began slowly, but within five chapters i was hooked. I look forward to more from this author.
This book is sold 4.5 stars. Why? Well, let's dive in, and I like to get the bad out of the way so that we can talk about all the good. I’ll be bluntly honest, I had a hard time starting this book, and I almost didn’t think I would read it, but then it took off. I could put it down after that, but I feel like you should understand why this book was so hard to get into, and yet, it’s totally worth the bump in the road. The author takes us through his story by switching from one character to the next. I like this style, but, in the beginning he should have spent more time with each character. The quick change from one person to the next was jarring. Especially because I hadn’t learned who these characters were, in some case I hadn’t realized it was a character I had already met. Mostly the fact that I could not recall the character's name. This is worse if you read this book over a period of time. (Like me.)
Once I became familiar with his characters, I fell in love with the story. I hate to give spoilers, and I’m not about to. So instead of going on and on about the plot, I rather talk about the uniqueness of this book. Do you like Dungeons and Dragon type books? Tolkien fan? What about supernatural thrills based on the shadows of our world? Perhaps you yearn for a good dungeon adventure? Well, this book as all of that, and some romance to boot. You might ask? How can it, how can it work? All I can say is, “It does,” and the author does an amazing job of weaving it all together by the end.
If you want to know how he did this, well read it of course. This book is a thrill and a real page turner once you get it in. I feel like if he would have not jumped between characters so fast early in the book, this would have been five stars. Give it a chance, you will love it.
