As usual I loved Mary Kay's new book Spring Fever. She has a way of making us love her characters and feeling like we know them and also love how she brings in the flavor of the South and what is happening here. The South has been devastated by closing plants of all nature and stripe. The textile mills that employed so many and allowed a sector of our country to enjoy a middle class existence are all gone. The last time I looked for fabric it was all made in China. Horrible. Not only that it was at least $30 more a yard, so who won in that deal? If you want to see the real effect of jobs going overseas specifically to China you need only ride through the back roads of the old South. It will break your heart. Small towns boarded up and just ghost towns. Things you won't see cruising down the freeway at 80 mph on your way to Florida. I appreciate that Mary Kay takes a stand on that in her new book. It made me wonder what ever happened to soft drinks such as Squirt, Ni Hi Grape and the like. Good job Mary Kay!
I really loved all of the people in this book even Ceila. She had a past she couldn't reconcile with as so many people do, she invented a new self. She was just living in a dream world that got out of control and she became a person that lost her integrity and honor. Sad in itself.
I appreciate that Mary Kay toned down the four letter words in this book. People simply do not express themselves with the "F" word every other word so I am so grateful she only uses it to great effect in this book like most people who save that word for when nothing else will do, lol. Hooray Mary Kay! Thanks for that.
I only have one little nit that I noticed and perhaps I missed it but I thought that Pokey's real name was Pauline but on the book jacket it calls her Patricia. I looked back through the book to see if perhaps her name was Patricia Pauline but couldn't find it. I loved the book and was sorry when it ended. Can't wait for her next book.
If you love Mary Kay Andrews books and her fun romps through the South, you will love this book. I highly recommend it for a fun read. Who doesn't need some fun these days?
I’m a big Mary Kay Andrews fan – she’s my ‘go to’ author when I’m craving a story that evokes summertime and is awash with southern charm and humor. Unfortunately, “Spring Fever” was a rare MKA miss for me.
Annajane Hudgens has been divorced for five years, but it’s not until she sees her ex-husband standing at the altar, minutes away from saying “I Do” to another woman, that she realizes she’s still in love with Mason Bayless. When the wedding does not go off as planned, Annajane and Mason are given another chance, but will they squander the opportunity?
Jeez, these two characters were so pitiful! Annajane continued to work with her husband for five years after he broke her heart, pining away like a 7th grader with a crush on Justin Bieber – how pathetic. And Mason? Well, Mason Bayless needs to be force-fed a mega dose of calcium to shore up that wimpy backbone of his. I don’t want to tread into spoiler territory here, so I’ll just say that Mason’s reason for ending his marriage to Annajane was downright lame, and he was so easily manipulated by everyone around him – what a sad sack.
It’s hard to enjoy a book when the two main characters grate on your nerves, but there were elements of this story that I did like. Mason’s sister “Pokey” was a delightful character and the town of Passcoe, North Carolina sounded quirky and charming. I enjoyed reading about the refurbished Pinecone Motor Lodge and its owners Harold and Thomas. The author writes well, smooth and professional, and the dialog is nicely done. It’s too bad that the wishy-washy leads soured this one for me, but there’s always another MKA charmer waiting in the wings.
Occasional swearing/strong language and some (non-explicit) adult content.
