I wish I were better at writing reviews. I gave this book the 5 stars it deserves and encourage anyone trying to decide to jump on it and start reading early because you will not want to stop.

The blurbs I saw before reading lead me to believe it was a remake of Podkayne. And it is not. And that is good.

I am a 70 year old retired trucker. I read Norton, Asimov and Heinlein books as they were published by the streetlight coming through my bedroom window, then got in trouble at school the next day for falling asleep during class.This book would have fit right in.

This book is a great coming of age book, and it is Science Fiction at it's best. Carrie Vaughn delivered. If you are a fan, why are you reading this, get after the book. If you are new to Carrie Vaughn you are very lucky because she is prolific and you have many great hours of reading ahead of you. Again, thank you CV, am looking forward to many new adventures in well thought out and realized future world.

When I started reading Science Fiction novels as a high school freshman, my favorite author was Robert Heinlein. I loved his juvenile novels. So when I say martians Abroad reads like a Heinlein juvenile, that's high praise. When I say it's like a Heinlein juvenile without being preachy, (Heinlein's writings did have that unfortunate quality) that's even higher praise. I've been a fan of Carrie Vaughn since I read Kitty and the Midnight Hour. A typical Carrie Vaughn protagonist is a strong woman, and her story is her quest to find her strength. Polly Newton of Martian's Abroad is such a character.
The second most important character in the book is Poly's twin brother, Charles. To draw one more comparison/contrast to Heinlein, Charles is somewhat like Podkayne Fries brother, Clark, in Podkayne of Mars. They are alike in that both have IQs well into the genius range, and in that you wouldn't want to get on the bad side of either. The difference is that Charles has a good side. You could imagine being his friend. He is a much more sympathetic character than Clark.
Martians Abroad is Carrie Vaughn's first science fiction novel, and I look forward to her writing more in this genre. I believe her next book, Bannerless, due out this summer, is also science fiction. But i do hope that someday, she is inspired to write another Kitty book.
Robert Heinlein wrote a book called Podkayne of Mars in 1962. It was about a 15-year-old girl named Podkayne "Poddy" Fries and her 11-year-old, maybe psycopathic brother, Clark. They on a ship with their uncle to travel to Venus. Stuff happens. Podkayne saves her brother and uncle and dies or doesn't, depending on if you read Heilein's preferred ending of the book of the version that the publishers wanted. I liked the book.

Carrie Vaughn wrote Martians Abroad in 2017. It's about a 17-year-old girl named Polly Newton and her kind-of twin brother, somewhat psychopathic brother, Charles. They get on a ship and travel to Earth to go to school. Stuff happens.

At about 10-15% in to the book I thought, "Is this like Fuzzy Nation, a reboot?" It took me a while and then I connected it to Podkayne of Mars.

At 50% into the book I was really enjoying it. Carrie's version differed a lot of Heinleins. Charles wasn't nearly as Clark and Polly wasn't nearly as girly and weak as Poddy. Also, the book wasn't at all about the conflict of a mother having children, raising them, and simultaneously working.

At 95% into the book, I decided that Carrie was evil and I hated her. How dare she follow the original so closely? What's wrong with her?

At 96% I forgave her and was glad she did what she did.

It's a good read. It's good for the kids now. It's good for adults who grew up with Heinlein.
Big fan of Carrie Vaughn's work, I've read her Kitty novels, her Golden Age novels and her short story collections.

This is a YA book, so expect that. It had several inside references to Heinlein's "Podkayne of Mars". Completely different story, but a few references for us fans of the famous novel.

Looking forward to a possible series. As another reviewer mentioned, Polly (the narrater) seemed immature even for a YA novel, but Ms. Vaughn does really good character development across novels in a series, and you need a base to develop from.
This seems like a very good start to a series and I really hope it isn't just a standalone novel. I read it in one sitting and, though it wraps up nicely, it left me wanting to know more about the peculiarities of the interplanetary politics and how Polly's life and career evolve in the future. The door seems to have been left open for it.

The timing couldn't be much better, either, with so many people waiting on the next book and TV season in James S. A. Corey's The Expanse. Martians Abroad is lighter but it fits broadly into the same class of near-future believable space opera. It also makes me think of an old little-known British SF TV series, Star Cops, that I adored. The noir crossover isn't nearly as blatant as either of those, however, since none of the characters are actual detectives.

It's definitely a departure from Vaughn's Kitty Norville series in terms of genre but I love this particular niche for the same reason I love Urban Fantasy, Steampunk and a certain subset of Superheroes. It's far easier to put yourself into the shoes of the character if they live in a universe only skewed a bit in time or dimension from your own rather than a complete departure to an alien universe. You don't have to make so much headspace for languages, names and customs as you do with High Fantasy and its SF equivalents. I like the broader genres (and intricate conlangs) as well; but, if you read thousands of books and follow a lot of series it's rather more difficult to re-immerse yourself in the series quickly with a year or more and a few hundred unrelated books between installments.
