I recently finished reading Scott James Magner's first Novella, Hearts of Iron. I had no previous exposure to the Foreworld Saga, or any SideQuest offerings, but in the end it did not matter. As a voracious reader of most things Fantasy, it was very refreshing to come upon an author who put time and effort into the finer details of their writing. Far too often Fantasy writers gloss over the technical aspects of warfare, and it was a relief to see that Scott provided quite a bit of information within each encounter.As a reviewer, I won't bore you with a duplicate synopsis of the story, or potentially spoil things you wish to discover for yourself. Instead, let me emphasize that this Novella displays a strong grasp of unique and memorable character creation, undoubtedly honed over the years of working within the gaming industry, and an eye for descriptive detail. I am a visual reader, and while being a Novella does limit the overall descriptive length, I found a visually rich story being spun before my eyes as I cycled page after page.
Is it all songbirds and singalongs? No. As noted, this is a promising first entry by Scott James Magner. Rarely do you find someone who hits a home run on their first at bat, but the Author displays instincts and understanding that with time will be honed further. I can only hope that he continues to receive opportunities, because I feel it would be a shame to let someone with such promise escape the grasps of wanting readers. Specifically, for me, it was a single character. In hindsight, it could very well be chalked up to the length limitations dictated by the format (Novella). I wanted some conclusions to be reached at a slower pace.
I've already recommended this book to my inner circle of fellow Fantasy readers, and now I do so to the greater public. If you're a Prime member, you've got your freebie to use. Additionally, if you're on the fence about plunking down a meager amount for some quality Fantasy - try a sample, it won't kill you.

Starting with the long work, The Mongoliad, my friends and I have been devouring the stories of the Shield Warriors. So it is with a great deal of respect that I offer criticism to this particular work. As a writer and an English teacher, I expect a professional work to have a few errors now and then. But this piece is so badly proofread that it becomes unreadable on nearly every page. For example "He knelt at the rug, loosening it enough to add the weapons moving it so he could loosen the bundle enough to add the weapons." Very often, the writer seems to lose himself in a sentence, leaving the reader to attempt a translation. If the author reads this, I will offer to proofread future works at no cost. Why? I admire the work and I like the story. I hate to see good work ruined by a lack of attention to detail, where the devil dwells. No?
I'm hooked. ) The stories are engrossing and somewhat historically accurate. Of course, a bit of poetic license should be granted, but I found myself thinking. "It could of happened exactly like that." more than once.
This is a great sidequest that takes place in a time and place I wasn't too informed about before reading- parts of Italy when some of the Normans were making it their own (of a sort). So not only did it inspire me to research some more of the history but it is also a good adventure tale with some insight on western martial arts.
I enjoyed Hearts of Iron quite a bit, especially the relationship between the three warrior brothers that are rooted at the center of the storyline. Written in a historical setting rife with Byzantine politics, in a time where death and intrigue are lurking around every corner, Hearts of Iron was refreshing to read and a very enjoyable way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Hearts of Iron drops you into the Byzantine corridors of power, providing an unflinching study of a harsh world. The three brothers, sons of a Norman knight, use their blades--and their brains--as they deal with threats, promises, allies, and enemies. Magner's writing delivers detailed authenticity that immersed me into the story. This novella should please fans of Dune or A Song of Ice and Fire, or anyone who prefers something more complex than "good king vs. bad king."
An excellent addition to The Foreworld Saga!
I haven't read any of the other Foreworld Saga books, but this one was a pretty good read. And based on it I will probably try the others some day when I get all caught up on my reading.
It read a lot like a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, with some plot twists that I assume relate to the Foreworld world.
(Spoiler alert)
It did seem a little too obvious that the "thug" they hired on to help, who was recommended by another character, was going to be a problem. While, of course, I should have been suspicious of his motives, it was pretty clear he was going screw things up from the beginning. It would have been nice to have at least some doubt about my assessment of him.
Another fine addition to the Foreworld stories, I look forward to reading more from this author. Fine addition to the lexicon of Foreworld tales.
